"Taking a break": 2016-2017
I've been a hobbyist woodcarver of Norwegian styles since 2009. In 2016, I gave up most of my possessions, my apartment, and my job to go to Dovre, Norway and study at the Hjerleid school for handcrafts. My (Seattle-based) teacher had studied at the same school in his youth, and after hearing so many interesting stories I decided to check it out for myself.
The ten months I lived in Norway were difficult at times, but also deeply fulfilling. I made lasting friendships and unforgettable memories. Living without my US friends and familiar surroundings was tough, and coming back to "real life" and picking up where I'd left off was also a big challenge. I wouldn't change a thing.
The projects I worked on during the year at Hjerleid can be viewed at my site Thought & Memory Design.
